Beginning a New Business OpportunityBy Rich Niccolls
I was sick of the same old 9-to-5 grind, and I had only been doing it for a few short years. When I started off, it seemed like one of those dream careers that everyone always thinks is so great. I was the assistant director of the English department at a Dallas university. Now, don't get me wrong, I love to teach. I love to be with people. I love the academic atmosphere. However, it is the university politics, the administrative work, "kissing-up" to everyone, and the endless staff meetings and conferences that wear you down quickly. On top of all that, I simply like to call my own shots, rather than be told when I should work and when I shouldn't.
On top of all that, I had always been somewhat of an entreprenuer. I had helped to start a couple of great new business opportunities – a chance to work with people I liked doing work that I loved. I learned a lot, failed a lot, and made a little bit of money. So, I decided to bust my hump and learn my own home business while I was teaching. Within 18 months, I resigned and had officially taken off with my new business opportunity. I've never looked back. I see too many people struggle and struggle for year after year trying to get their home business off the ground. There are a couple of reasons for this. Number one is that they switch companies too often. You need to stay focused and not dilute your time. Number two is they are following people who only tell them what they want to hear. If you want to be successful, you need to have someone take you WAY out of your comfort zone. Number three is they are not willing to learn new skills. The primary skill I am referring to is using the phone. Number four is they are constantly beating up their friends and family. How far would Bill Gates have gone if he only tried to sell to his family and friends?
The bottomline is if you want to start a successful, new home business, then you need to run it like a business, and not a hobby.
